Justin Roiland

What do you know about Justin Roiland and the reason for his resignation?

UPDATE: Justin Roiland has resigned from Squanch Games, the video game developer banner that he co-founded in 2016. The company shared the news Tuesday evening.

The original story regarding Roiland’s exit from Adult Swim follows below.

Adult Swim is severing ties with “Rick & Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland after he was charged with domestic violence.

“Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland,” the network said in a statement.

As previously reported, Roiland was charged in Orange County, Calif., with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. He pleaded not guilty in 2020 and appeared in court Thursday, Jan. 13, 2023, for a pre-trial hearing. A trial date has not yet been set. He is due for another pre-trial hearing on April 27.

According to the felony complaint, obtained by Variety, the incident occurred on or around Jan. 19, 2020, against an unnamed Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time.

In addition to co-creating “Rick & Morty” with Dan Harmon, Roiland also provides the voices of the two main characters on the show as well as various other characters. The show is expected to continue without Roiland, and sources say his roles will be recast. Adult Swim had previously renewed “Rick & Morty” in 2018 for 70 additional episodes with the intention of taking it to 100 episodes at least. To date, 61 episodes of the series have aired, with Season 6 having wrapped up in December 2022.

Roiland also has the animated comedy “Solar Opposites” at Hulu, which was renewed for a fifth season back in October. He also provides a voice and executive produces the recently launched Hulu animated comedy “Koala Man.”

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Justin Roiland (born February 21, 1980)[2] is an American animator, voice actor, writer, producer and director. He is the co-creator of Adult Swim's animated sitcom Rick and Morty, for which he voiced the protagonists Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith until the network severed ties with him in 2023.[3] He is the co-creator of Hulu's Solar Opposites, in which he voices the main character, Korvo. He has also played Earl of Lemongrab on Adventure Time, Blendin Blandin on Gravity Falls, and Oscar on Fish Hooks. He founded the animation studio Justin Roiland's Solo Vanity Card Productions! and the video game studio Squanch Games.

Early life

Roiland was born and raised in Manteca, California.[4] He attended Sierra High School up until the first quarter of his senior year and then transferred to Manteca High School for the remainder of his senior year, graduating in 1998.[5] After high school, he attended Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California.[6] Roiland is dyslexic.[7]

Career

He got involved with Channel101, an L.A. media collective started by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, where he made and acted in numerous movie shorts (such as 2 Girls One Cup: The ShowHouse of Cosbys and a small role as musician Christopher Cross in the series Yacht Rock) and in the VH1 television show Acceptable TV.[8][9] He appeared regularly on The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central as "Blonde Craig".[10][11] From 2010 to 2016, he co-hosted The Grandma's Virginity Podcast with future Rick and Morty writer, Ryan Ridley, and future Steven Universe producer, Jackie Buscarino.[12]

In 2012, Adult Swim approached Harmon to produce a new animated series for their network. Harmon approached Roiland and together, they created Rick and Morty which debuted in 2013 to widespread acclaim. The show quickly grew a fan community as audiences praised the show for its unique story telling and incorporation of science-fiction elements. Between 2013 and 2022, Roiland voiced Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith. In addition to the voice work, Roiland served as a co-writer and executive producer alongside Dan Harmon.[13][14] By the end of season 1, Rick and Morty became one of the most successful shows Adult Swim ever produced.[15] The success of Rick and Morty spearheaded an entire franchise around it. Various Rick and Morty themed merchandise have been produced and sold. In addition to the show, Rick and Morty maintains an app called "Pocket Mortys". On August 25, 2016, Roiland launched virtual reality studio Squanchtendo, a portmanteau of the company Nintendo and Rick and Morty character Squanchy.[16] It was later renamed to Squanch Games.[14][17] Its first full-length title, Accounting+, made in collaboration with William Pugh's studio, was released for PSVR on December 19, 2017.[18]

Art

In January 2021, Roiland offered over a dozen artworks in his first NFT art collection, titled "The Best I Could Do". His highest-selling piece was by his Simpsons homage The Smintons, sold at $290,100. The collection sold for a total of $1.65 million.[19] Roiland also sold his first painting, titled mypeoplefriend, via auction by Sotheby's in July 2021.[20]

In Halloween of 2022, Roiland released a generative NFT project named "Art Gobblers" with Paradigm Ventures.[citation needed]

Legal issues

In August 2020, Roiland was charged and arrested with felony domestic battery and false imprisonment in Orange County, California, in connection with an alleged incident in January 2020 involving an unnamed woman he was reportedly dating at the time. Roiland was released on bail, after pleading not guilty, and pre-trial is scheduled for April 27, 2023.[21] Knowledge of these events were not public until NBC News reported on the matter in January 2023.[22][23] A day after news of the charges broke, American musician Allie Goertz tweeted screenshots of sexual and offensive private Twitter messages that had been sent to her by Roiland.[24]

Adult Swim announced later that month that Roiland had been dismissed from Rick and Morty due to the charges and his roles would be recast for future seasons.[25] Squanch Games affirmed that Roiland had resigned from the company on January 16, 2023, in wake of the Adult Swim news.[26]
